radioiodine
Edited by Joe Hing Kwok Chu
A radioactive isotope of iodine. It can be used in diagnostic tests as well
as in radiation therapy of hyperthyroidism. Radioactive iodine is administered
in capsule form on a one time basis to destroy thyroid tissues. It takes 8-12
weeks for the thyroid to become normal after treatment. The majority of the
patients undergoing this treatment eventually develop hypothyroid (low in
thyroid hormone) which can be treated easily with thyroid hormones. Radioiodine
should not be used during pregnancy and breast feeding.
