mean corpuscular volume (MCV)  (in English and Chinese 中英文)

Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is the average volume of an individual cell.

It is calculated either by automatic equipments or manually dividing the volume of packed cells (hematocrit) by the number of red blood cells. The size is expressed in cubic micrometers.

Clinical implications:

MCV increased:

1. Folic acid deficiency (dietary, mal-absorption, pregnancy)

2. Vitamin B12 deficiency (pernicious anemia, mal-absorption)

3. Reticulocytosis, (acute bleeding, hemolytic anemia)

4. Cirrhosis

5. Chronic alcoholism

6. Less common causes of increase MCV include: malignancy, phenytoin or cyto-toxic drugs, myxedema, sideroblastic anemia, or aplastic anemia.

MCV decreased:

1. Chronic iron deficiency

2. Alpha-or beta-thalassemia

3. Anemia of chronic disease (uremia, rheumatoid-collagen disease, severe chronic infection, etc)

4. Less common causes include: polycythemia, lead poisoning, congenital spherocytosis, and some abnormal hemoglobins (HbE, Hb Lepore)

計算方法：通過自動設備或通過人工計算把壓積紅血細胞細胞體積（血球容積比）除以紅細胞的數量。立方微米的大小表示。
　

臨床意義：
　

MCV增加：

1. 葉酸缺乏（膳食，吸收不良，妊娠）

2. 維生素B12缺乏（惡性貧血，吸收不良）

3. 網狀細胞增多症（急性出血，溶血性貧血）

4. 肝硬化

5. 慢性酒精中毒

6. 增加的MCV不太常見的原因包括：惡性腫瘤，苯妥英或細胞毒性藥物，粘液性水腫，鐵粒幼細胞貧血，再生障礙性貧血。
   　

MCV下降：
　

1. 慢性缺鐵

2. α-或β-地中海貧血

3. 貧血慢性疾病（尿毒症，類風濕，膠原性疾病，嚴重慢性感染等）

4. 不太常見的原因包括：先天性球形紅細胞增多症，鉛中毒，和一些不正常的血紅蛋白（血紅蛋白萊波雷HBE）
