It is one of the twenty amino acids directly coded in proteins. It is abundant in cheese.
It exists in many types of protein. It is a precursor of epinephrine, norepinephrine, thyroxine, triiodothyronine and melatonin.
It is nonessential in humans since it can be synthesized from phenylalanine.
