Pulse wave

by: Joe Hing Kwok Chu

The shape of the waves created by the blood being squeezed into the main artery by the constriction of the ventricle.

Pulse wave velocity provides information on stiffness and distensibility of an artery. Stiffer the artery or lesser its distensibility, higher the pulse wave velocity. The measurement of pulse wave velocity is usefull in the study of the effects of aging, vascular diseases, vasodilating and vasoconstricting agents on arteries.
