Gui zhi is from the branches.

Rou gui is the thick bark of the trees.

Pharmaceutical name

Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae

Latin botanical name

Cinnamomum cassia Blume

Cinnamomum Ioureiru Nees.

Pronounced in Japanese

keishi

Pronounced in Korean

kyechi

Pronounced in Cantonese

kwai chi

Common Name

cinnamon twig (gui zhi)

thick bark of cinnamon tree (rou gui)

Distribution

Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Fujian

Characteristics and channel (meridian) relation

acrid, sweet, warm. Related to heart, lung,  and bladder channels.

Uses

1). tonic for stomach, rid of wind, to promote sweating, for headache, anemia,, cold limbs, to promote urination.

2). to promote lung qi, in chill and fever, cold phlegm, diarrhea, muscle spasm,  headache, back pain, sweating, to stop easily being annoyed, strengthening muscles and bones, promote circulation.

Usually rou gui is used in tonic while gui zhi is used for expelling wind and dampness.

dosage

gui zhi:3-10 g per day for boiling. Ruo gui: 1-5 g used as powder form.
