Compiled by: Joe Hing Kwok Chu

Coniine is the main alkaloid toxin in poison hemlock (Conium maculatum). It is a colorless, oily liquid alkaline. It was first isolated in 1827 by Giesecke. In 1895 Wolffenstein determined structure. Hemlock and its salt  are extremely poisonous. It is toxic to humans and all classes of livestock; less than 0.2g is fatal to humans, with death caused by respiratory paralysis, but when used in a small amount it has an physiological anticonvulsant effect.
